Join us for two exciting events with renowned translation theorist Lawrence Venuti this Thursday, May 1st, 2025!
Lawrence Venuti, Professor Emeritus of English at Temple University, is a distinguished translation theorist, historian, and accomplished translator of Italian, French, and Catalan. He will be visiting our campus this Thursday for two thought-provoking events:
-
Brown-Bag Discussion: Englishing Camus’ L’Étranger
12:00 PM | Phelps 6206C
This lunchtime session will feature a focused discussion on translation, guided by a PowerPoint slide that explores the challenges of rendering the first paragraph of L’Étranger into English. No knowledge of French is required! This event will be geared especially toward graduate students, but all are welcome. -
Formal Lecture: The Translator’s Dilemma: Thinking vs. Doing?
5:00 PM | Annenberg Conference Room
In this lecture, Professor Venuti examines how recent works by professional translators contribute to our understanding of translation. He will reflect on how these writings navigate the tension between intuitive decision-making and interpretive analysis, drawing on examples ranging from The New Yorker’s 2020 review of Dissipatio H.G. to Lydia Davis’s musings on translating Proust, Daniel Hahn’s translator’s diary, and Damion Searls’s 2024 study The Philosophy of Translation. This talk will be of interest to anyone engaged in translation, literary studies, or the ethics of interpretation.
